Striking the Black Snake: Poems from Standing Rock is part manifesto, part testimony, part confessional — a raw account of the winter of 2016–2017 at Oceti Sakowin Camp, where poet MG Salazar answered a calling to stand as a water protector against the Dakota Access Pipeline. These poems chronicle the struggle on the ground, reckon with colonialism and identity, and speak directly to future generations who will inherit what we protect or destroy. Since Standing Rock, the collection has grown to include poems from subsequent frontlines including the BLM uprisings, Trump's Border Wall, to Salazar's ancestral lands of Northern New Mexico. The book remains a living document of resistance and reclamation.
